Reading Comprehension
Sports
CRISTINA: Football? You must be joking. I can't stand
it.
MARK: No? Why not?
CRISTINA:
Oh, Mark, haven't you realized yet? Twenty-two men in shorts, running after a
ball, trying to kick it into a net,
a man blowing a whistle, two others waving flags… and thousands of people
shouting and screaming like madmen every time it's a goal or not. Is this a
game?
MARK: I see… you
prefer things like hopscotch, hide-and-seek, leap frog, blind man's buff…
CRISTINA: Don't tease me, Mark. I'm not a child anymore
and there are much better sports than football.
MARK: Really?
CRISTINA: Yes, take volleyball, for example. It's so
exciting, I'd say wonderful, the two teams trying to keep the ball in motion
without letting it touch the ground. No foul play, no violence…
MARK: Yes, maybe
you're right. I like volleyball, too. For me all ball games are great!
CRISTINA: Not only ball games, Mark. Don't you like
badminton, cards, chess, even darts… and things like that?
MARK: Er… of course I do. Especially if I can play
it with you!
CRISTINA: Oh Mark! This is not fair play…

game, but extreme interviewing is deadly serious. The idea is to see how
quickly job-seekers think on their feet and, at a time when 25% of recent
graduates are unemployed, it offers employers a new way of separating the
brilliant candidates, from the merely very good. This new approach to selecting
candidates comes from Silicon Valley – California where else? , Google, famous

Mother's Day
Mother’s
Day around the World
Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is
observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of
Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S.
holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization
and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar.
While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day most commonly falls on the
second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers,
cards and other gifts.
While
versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated throughout the world, traditions vary
depending on the country. In Thailand, for example, Mother’s Day is always
celebrated in August on the birthday of the current queen, Sirikit. Another
alternate observance of Mother’s Day can be found in Ethiopia, where families
gather each fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a
multi-day celebration honoring motherhood.
In
the United States, Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated by presenting
mothers and other women with gifts and flowers, and it has become one of the
biggest holidays for consumer spending. Families might also celebrate by giving
mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores. At
times Mother’s Day has also been a date for launching political or feminist
causes. In 1968 Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther
King Jr., used
Mother’s Day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children.
In the 1970s women’s groups also used the holiday as a time to highlight the
need for equal rights and access to childcare.

Joe’s Story
G’day, I’m Joe Cross. You
might know me from the movie, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, which documented my personal journey to regain my health. When I made
the film, I literally was fat, sick and nearly dead. I was 100 pounds
overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune
disease. I was at the end of my rope and the end of my hope. In the mirror I
saw a 310lb man whose gut was bigger than a beach ball and a path laid out
before me that wouldn’t end well.
With doctors and
conventional medicines unable to help me long-term, I knew I had to drastically
change my lifestyle so I turned to the only option left: the body’s natural
ability to heal itself. I traded in my typical junk food diet and decided to
hit the road with a juicer and generator in tow, vowing only to drink fresh
fruit and vegetable juices for the next 60 days. Across 3,000 miles I had one
goal in mind: To get off the pills and achieve a healthy and balanced
lifestyle.
By juicing fruits and
vegetables, I successfully lost the weight and got myself off all prescription
drugs and truly rebooted my life. I also developed a passion and appreciation
for the delicious tastes and healing properties of the produce I was consuming.
Now I am free of my
autoimmune disease, I live a happy and balanced life at a healthy weight and I
could never imagine returning to my old ways again.
And you know what? If I can
do it, so can you!
Juice on!
Joe Cross
